Reading in Preschool

"My girls have always attended great progressive schools that emphasize reading "readiness" over actual reading. My older daughter, who was 4 at the time, explained to me that she really wanted to learn to read. I knew the school would not officially start reading instruction until 1st grade. I wanted to support her in her desire to learn. Liz came highly recommended by a former colleague. My colleague raved that she had taught her children to read so that they were several years beyond anyone else in their classes. Liz has not disappointed. I have always been thrilled with her work with my girls. She challenges them in a gentle and nurturing way and she makes house calls, which is so amazingly convenient. "I hired Liz to teach my 3 & 4 year olds how to read back in '05/'06. Right from the beginning, I loved how they were both so comfortable with her, and how she was able to challenge them. I was concerned that my son might become discouraged about his older sister learning faster than he was. But even though it took him a few weeks longer to get into it, he too began reading! After just a few months, they were both flying through the books, and started reading everywhere! Street signs, license plates, books, sports reviews.... Within a year, they had BOTH learned to read like 2nd graders. They are now 7 & 8, and have been reading chapter books like Harry Potter for the past year! One thing I also noticed during the time Liz was teaching them, was that they became more confident. Their friends would want to be around them all the time, so they could see/hear what they were reading. And their teachers and relatives of course were blown away.
