Soul Arts Academy is NYC's only progressive dance and creative arts school for students aged 20 months and up, combining exceptional artistic instruction with the development of the whole student. The academy offers a fall semester, spring semester, and a popular half/full-day summer arts workshop. In addition, Soul Arts offers studio rentals and professional birthday party planning services.
Founder and Creative Director Rosie Lanziero has developed an approach to arts education that truly focuses on each child’s holistic development. In every class at Soul Arts, students not only learn the movement vocabulary, technique and history of a particular dance genre, they are also encouraged to discover their artistic potential individually and communally in a supportive, non-competative environment.
From the school’s core curriculum – ballet, modern and hip-hop – to the school’s unique elective classes – Bharata Nataym, Flamenco, African, Circus Arts, Tap and Breaking – classes at Soul Arts combine technical prowess with artistic freedom. Athletic and graceful physicality, critical thinking, teamwork and a large dose of FUN are all important parts of the recipe that make each Soul Arts class great. Students and their family members are viewed as precious, creativity is cherished and encouraged, and individuals are provided with a safe, invigorating space to grow through movement.
The average class sizes are small, ranging from 6 to 12 students – this means a smaller student-to-teacher ratio, individualized attention to students, and special class instruction tailor-made to the unique qualities of each student. This makes the energy of each class fresh and different, ensuring no student is left out of activities.
In 2004, inspired by the birth of her daughter, performer/educator Rosie Lanziero offered her first creative movement class for young children. Word-of-mouth quickly conveyed the remarkable connection between Rosie and her students and more parents sought out her unique pedagogical approach to creative expression. Since then, Rosie’s initial class became the birth of Soul Arts Academy, now home to over 200 bright young artists attending more than 20 diverse classes.
