Explore the colors and textures of neighborhoods throughout the world in Walls, Diaries, and Paintings, an exhibition of new work by Brooklyn-based artist Jose Parla. Opening on March 3 at Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery, Parla documents city life in these photorealistic recreations of fragments of graffiti-marked walls. Using acrylic, ink, oil, enamel, plaster, and collage, his paintings capture both the chaos and the beauty of the cities in which we live.

Dorothy Simpson Krause has based her upcoming exhibition Visions on a 1797 poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge composed after an opium-influenced dream. Opening March 3 at 571 Projects, Krause combined digital technology with mixed media to create a series of haunting images of submerged architectural passageways, lit from within. Her use of Polaroid emulsion transfer, silver leaf, fresco, and brushed aluminum contributes to the dream-like feel of her paintings.

The mixed-media constructions of Alabama artist Thornton Dial are highlighted at the Andrew Edlin Gallery beginning March 19. Sometimes considered among the ranks of outsider artists, Dial’s dimensional assemblages are created with an endless assortment of found objects and address deeply personal, political, and cultural issues. There is a dark mystery to the work of this self-taught artist that has an intrigue and power all its own.
