The exhibition Room, currently running at Gasser & Grunert, is all about silk. New York artist Tiffany Pollack has created a dozen-plus silk paintings and her first large-scale silk installation in her second solo show at the gallery. Pollack paints directly on the silk substrates with highly saturated colored inks, creating dreamy, watery, and vivid abstracted images.
Her inspiration for this exhibit are the personal moments in her life. Her role as a new mother dominates the themes seen here, with colorful sleep charts, soft floral still lifes, and mother-child images evident. The centerpiece of the exhibit is Room, an installation piece created from six dyed silk panels that together create a tent-like space that recreates her daughter's room. The fact that you can enter Room to sit in the accompanying rocker serves to literally draw the viewer further into Pollack's private moments.
Room runs through February 12.
Gasser & Grunert is located on 524 West 19th Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues. (646-944-6197). Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
