The Hotel Chelsea is looking to soar to new heights after it was erected nearly 130 years ago but as usual, the remaining tenants are not happy.
The Chetrit Group has filed with the Landmarks Preservation Commission to "construct additions and rooftop bulkheads, install mechanical equipment, balcony partitions, replace ground floor infill, windows and a canopy," DNAinfo reports.
The proposition is not being met favorably from the 100 tenants of this artists' mecca.
"This is a landmark building and you don't want to put something that doesn't fit it at all," leader of the hotel tenant's association Zoe Pappas told DNAinfo.
The last time the hotel had been renovated, the consequences were nearly dire for the tenants, who filed suit against the landlord for ineptitude and negligence toward worsening conditions.
The commission rejected the November application on the grounds of improper fire exits from the rooftop, yet approval was given last month so that a 16-to-30-foot-tall rooftop scaffolding could be built to serve as a template for the rooftop.
