The building is going to be leveled, and so is the show.
The Chelsea Hotel is going under and at the behest of the hotel's tenant's association, Patti Smith's controversial concert is being cancelled, the Daily News reports.
"My motivation was solely to serve the tenants. If this serves them better, then I am satisfied," Smith told the Daily News.
Smith responded to the criticism over her performance yesterday, saying she's "done nothing to tarnish" the landmark's Bohemian reputation.
Smith was outraged when hearing about the evictions and shut down of the Chelsea, and took her own personal initiative to aid the people.
"People have the power," she has sung, and wished to give them that power through unofficial and uncompensated counseling on renovations for the hotel.
Regardless of her intentions, members of the tenant association told the Daily News, "The power of the media to let Patti Smith assume the leadership in the future of the Chelsea is offensive in light of the fact that she has not communicated directly with tenants."
