There are dozens of reading series in this city and so many of them can easily turn into a snoozefest. These days, everyone's a writer, right? Do you really want to subject yourself to an excerpt from a stranger's great American novel? Listen to the sad stories of lost loves by a handful of striving memoirists? If you're truly hungry to hear some exciting writing, all I can say is, sex sells!
“Sex Worker Literati” is, according to Zoe Hansen, “the slutty child of the groundbreaking and internationally acclaimed anthology 'Hos, Hookers, Call Girls and Rent Boys,' which shocked America by rocketing onto the front page of the Sunday New York Times Book Review, and gave voice to PhDs and high school dropouts, soccer moms and jailbirds, $5000 a night call girls, $10 crack hos and hard-working rent boys.” It is a live look behind the scene of sex workers in all their assorted permutations and a guaranteed good time. At the very least, I'll bet you won't find yourself falling asleep!
Co-producers Zoe Hansen and David Henry Sterry are included in the team of eight sexy scribes for November's event. Check out their selection of "glamorous yet seedy art babes, Ivy League smut peddlers, filthy poets and nasty dancers from the belly of the beast:"
Molly Crabapple is an illustrator for Marvel Comics, New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Neil Gaiman, among others. She is the creatrix of “Scarlett Takes Manhattan” and “The Puppet Makers,” an upcoming web series for DC Comics. She's also the mistress-mind behind “Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School,” alt.drawing salons that encourage creativity over cocktails in more than 100 cities.
Sam Benjamin is a Brown University graduate, former go-go dancer and an LA director. His book, "Confessions of An Ivy League Pornographer," is a memoir of a youth well spent.
Puma Perl is a Lower East Side poet, writer, performer, producer and recovering junkie who relives it all in her work. She is the author of Belinda and Her Friends and knuckle tattoos, and, with Big Mike, is half of DDAY Productions.
Big Mike is the creator of "Big Mike's Big Show" and the author of two books: “Sibling Rivalry” and “81 Pounds.”
Dr. Alex Kinney boasts “a PhD in Pornology, Professor of Filth & Debauchery, elocutionist, professional dominator, rough trade specialist and hedonist scholar.”
Miss Mary Cyn is a classically trained actor with a BFA from NYU who takes her clothes off in bars. She is the founder and co-producer of Original Cyn.
David Henry Sterry is a “former teen manchild ho, satirist, muckraker and author of a dozen books, including the inspiration for Sex Worker Literati, 'Hos, Hookers, Call Girls and Rent Boys,' which is being made into a dance piece to take the Lincoln Center by a top Hollywood producer, and 'Chicken,' which is being made into a TV show by Showtime.
Zoe Hansen arrived in New York City from London in 1984 at the ripe age of 18, searching for the American Dream. She found it wearing crotchless panties and six-inch pumps, running a high-end Manhattan brothel. Now she writes and performs about it.
You can be sure that the authors will have samples of their wares on hand for purchasing, just in case you're in search of holiday presents for your special someones. And just so you don't go home empty-handed, there will be party favors from Babeland! Yes, just as the chill of winter sets in, venture out for a reading series that will warm your cockles! Or perhaps roast your chestnuts...
