The Lower East Side was on fire last night, and unfortunately for at least two dozen residents and their neighbors, it wasn't because of a party.
Beginning around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night, flames quickly spread from the second floor of 21 East 2nd Street. Though the cause is still unclear, according to Gothamist, it took 140 firefighters to settle the flames down around 1:30 a.m.
FDNY officials told the New York Post that the blaze ran mostly through one shaft of the building comprised of very cluttered apartments, making it very difficult to extinguish.
There was so much smoke that an adjacent New York University dormitory had to be evacuated.
No casualties have been reported and two firefighters sustained only minor injuries. The Red Cross has offered to put up temporary housing to 30 adults and four children whose homes were destroyed.
