A large water main broke early this morning at Delancey Street and Bowery, flooding the intersection, which created gridlock during rush hour traffic. The main ruptured at 6:55 a.m. a few blocks adjacent to the Williamsburg Bridge.
The water main flooded the streets with over three feet of rapidly moving water. The intersection at Delancey St. and Bowery was shut down and the FDNY closed streets extending west of Chrystie St. and down to Bowery and Broome Street.
Carter Strickland, Commissioner of the Department for Environmental Protection, told DNAinfo that “the main was over 106 years old.”
In addition reports state that subways are not affected but several store fronts in the area are flooded.
