Legendary painter and resident of the National Arts Club, Will Barnet was awarded the 2011 National Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama. Barnet received this honor for “his contributions as an American painter, printmaker, and teacher.”
Barnet resides in a duplex apartment in the National Arts Club on Garmercy Park, and has lived there with his wife Elena since 1982.
For over 80 years, Barnet has been producing innovative and stunning visual works through paintings, drawings and prints. According to DNAinfo, Barnet had his first solo show in the city in 1935 and just has his first retrospective in New York last September, at the National Academy Museum.
The award is a spot of brightness after the controversy and scandal surrounding the National Arts Club’s former board president O. Aldon James.
