Event Details: Thu Apr 7, 2011 - 4:00pm at Baruch College Performing Arts Center ( 55 Lexington Avenue at E. 25th St. )

The Simons Foundation and the Museum of Mathematics (MoMath), which expects to open its doors in the Flatiron District next year, has already begun to offer some programs within the neighborhood. Last month, MoMath drew about 350 people to Baruch College for "The Geometry of Origami, From Science to Sculpture," the first in a series of what it calls Math Encounters, programs designed to illustrate how math is woven into the fabric of everyday life.

On Thursday, April 7, the next in the series will be given: "Symmetry, Art & Illusion: Amazing Symmetrical Patterns in Music, Drawing and Dance." Artist and author Scott Kim will lead an exploration of the world of symmetry and art, revealing how the same patterns reappear in art, music, dance and animation. Audience members will be invited to take part in a hands-on workshop. It will all happen at Baruch's Performing Arts Center, 55 Lexington Avenue at 25th Street, from 4pm to 6pm There is no admission charge, but registration is necessary. For additional information, call (212) 542-0566 or e-mail mathencounters@momath.org.

Once open, the musuem will be the only one of its kind in North America devoted to math and its many connections. For more information, visit www.momath.org.
