We just received this from our dear friends at apple seeds, an indoor play space for children located at 10 West 25th Street between Broadway and Sixth Avenue.
"One of our very good friends, Liam Witt, lost his courageous battle to cancer on January 24th. May 13th is Liam's birthday - he would have turned seven. On that day -- apple seeds and Chelsea Day School are coming together to host a huge bake sale.
Glad (our favorite bag company) is matching ALL funds raised from bake sales in May. 100% of the money raised at our sale (plus the money Glad donates) will go to Cookies for Kids Cancer. Cookies for Kids Cancer is the inspiring nonprofit that Liam's parents, Gretchen and Larry, founded that supports research for new and improved therapies for pediatric cancer."
Here is an excerpt from a personal account by apple seeds co-founder Allison Schlanger:
"Liam was diagnosed at two years old and fought cancer for 4 1/2 years. In that time, he had countless surgeries and rounds of high dose chemo. He lost his hair all the time, he had a port in his chest for medicine, he was sequestered away from friends and extended family when his immune system was down. He never complained. Never. Liam was filled with life, energy, happiness, smiles, hugs, love, guts and courage. I was at the hospital the night he died. It was an experience that will never leave me. The pain of watching this amazing family have to say good bye forever to their child cut me deeper than I can ever possibly explain in an email. It was and still is utterly unthinkable."
All you have to do to participate is buy some delicious cookies! You can buy cookies in our area at apple seeds and at the plaza just north of the Flatiron building throughout the day on Friday, May 13th.
