Already popular among basketball fans, Community Board 10 hopes to recognize Rucker Park as a historic landmark in the city, according to DNAinfo.
The park has been home to basketball legends ranging from Julius Erving to Kobe Bryant. Kevin Durant's 66-point eruption at the Entertainter's Basketball Classic this past summer only added to the park's well-documented legacy.
It's about time this sector of the Manhattan borough gets recognized.
"We've got this amazing sports site that people around the world know about. You literally have people coming from all over the world to watch it," CB10 District Manager Paimaan Lodhi told DNAinfo.
Lodhi also recalled the fate of the old Polo Grounds, which no longer exists, as further evidence for why Rucker Park should be officially labeled a historic landmark.
For many, the park is already a landmark.
"It's already a landmark. I just heard they named a park in China Rucker Park. I would love for it to be an official landmark," said Greg Marius, CEO and founder of the Entertainer's Basketball Classic.
If approved, Rucker Park would represent Central Harlem's third designated historic site.
CB10 is currently working to refine their proposal. They expect a voting to be held this spring.
