Think about your daily routine and determine how much of your time is spent on a computer, whether at home or at work. In a world where social media tells you everything you need to know and jobs that require you to spend at least eight hours a day surfing the net or sending out emails, it is almost impossible to avoid being on a computer.

Computers are so implanted in your life that you are probably completely unaware of the effects it could have on your body. It has become all too common for people to suffer from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or Repetitive Stress Injury, just because of activities like typing on a keyboard for long periods of time.

Safko Chiropractic and Massage has had incredible success in treating these conditions, before patients feel the need to resort to surgical treatment options.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is first recognized by a tingling or numbness in your hand and wrist. After a period of time, a sharp, piercing pain shoots through your wrist and up your arm. Ultimately this will turn into a painful progressive condition caused by compression of a key nerve in the wrist. When the medium nerve running from the forearm into the palm becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist, it leads to this condition.

Whether or not repetitive and forceful movements of the hand and wrist during work actually lead to carpal tunnel syndrome is a back and forth question, factors such as trauma or injury to the wrist, hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis, work stress or menopause can lead to CTS.

Acupuncture and chiropractic care are the most effective non-surgical treatments for CTS. Alternatively, yoga has been known to reduce pain and improve grip strength. However, if symptons persist for more than six months, it may be time to see surgery, done under a local anesthetic.

With the use of Myofascial Release (MFR) and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Therapies (PNF) at Safko Chiropractic and Massage, patients are able to find relief without having to resort to surgery. Once you begin to sense the signs of this condition, it is important to seek treatment as quickly as possible. MFR treatment reduces tissue displacement to realign and even out the fascial web that surrounds the body. PNF is built around stretching exercises to improve flexibility, strength and stamina, as well as range of motion in damaged or stiff muscles.

In an effort to prevent this condition at work, try stretching exercises, taking frequent breaks, wearing splints to keep your wrists straight and use correct posture and wrist position.
