Do you remember how proud your parents were when you finally said your first word? For some it was mom, for others it was dad, and for some it was doggie, but no matter what your first word was, one thing is clear. It was an accomplishment that will never be forgotten.
Your speech is part of your everyday life and language is a useful tool for communication, demonstration, and understanding, and without it, the world would be silent. Yet, while it is important to understand the importance of speech, knowing how to use it to foster optimal communication skills is key and with New York Neurogenic Speech-Language Pathology, children and adults can express their true potential by learning to effectively communicate with others through speech therapy techniques.
The truth is, great speakers are not born, they are created. From their first word, to their first speech, knowing how to effectively communicate is important and speech therapy can help you perfect your language skills as well.
The first step to effective speech-language pathology intervention is an individual, in-depth assessment of speech and cognitive-linguistic skills. Assessment procedures are chosen based on an individuals’ age and the nature of their disorder. Clinical observations as well as standardized and non-standardized evaluation tools are used and the initial assessment takes between one and two hours. After being completed, a diagnosis is formulated based on the condition of the client’s disorder. Finally, the patient is then referred to a physician for treatment by which a therapist and patient collaborate to develop an individualized Plan of Care.
