It is a story that begins with the love and appreciation for the fine art of chamber music, that blossomed into 20 years of remarkable performances by some of the most incredible musicians. Bringing the audience and the performers together, Festival Chamber Music has created an atmosphere like that of close friends sharing an evening of music at home together.
Music is the focus and passion behind each and every concert, playing rarely heard pieces for unusual combinations of instruments along with music that you both know and love. The artists may not take themselves too seriously, but the music they share with the audience is nothing but amazing and professional.
Festival Chamber Music thrives by following two simple goals: Showcasing classical music concerts to new audiences as beautiful and enjoyable, and presenting the highest quality chamber music in an accessible, beginner-friendly environment. It is an honor for Director Ruth Sommers when audiences leave a concert and have nothing but wonderful words to share about their experience.
On February 9 at 8 p.m., Festival Chamber Music will be presenting the world premiere piece from award winning composer, Gabriela Lena Frank, Mititos. This is a completely brand new work commissioned for their 20th Anniversary celebration.
A 2009 recipient of the prestigious John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship and the winner of the Latin Grammy for Best Classical Contemporary Composition, Frank has been commissioned by several major orchestras and chamber organizations.
Mititos, is a duo for violin and piano as a collection of pieces inspired by characters or objects that one might encounter in Latin American fables. Violinist Eriko Sato and pianist David Oei, to whom the piece is dedicated to, will be taking the stage to perform this original piece.
The program will open with Mozart's beloved Quartet in F Major, K.370 for Oboe and Strings with the brilliant young oboist, James Austin Smith, joining Ms. Sato, violist, Calvin Wiersma, and cellist Ruth Sommers. The show will conclude with Dvorak's gorgeous Romantic Piano Quartet in E Flat Major, Op.87. Ms. Frank will speak about the new work at the concert.
With over 100 performances ranging from well-known masterpieces to rarely heard works, Festival Chamber Music has bringing audiences a new appreciation for an amazing form of music.
