Born in Port-au-Prince Haiti, Wyclef Jean moved to the Coney Island area of Brooklyn when he was 9 years old. Speaking only Haitian-French, Jean learned how to speak English by listening to American rap music, which he soon took a strong interest in. Throughout his teen years, Jean studied music, majoring in jazz and learned how to play more than 15 instruments.
Working alongside musician Lauryn Hill, Jean began experimenting with hip-hop music and his talent soon became a focus of several music executives. In 1993 he signed with Columbia Records with the group Fugees. Since then he has taken to recording a platinum-selling solo album, among others. Jean has demonstrated his versatility by embracing the world of acting as well as politics with his recent campaign for president of Haiti.
Wyclef Jean has worked with an array of pop, R&B and hip-hop artists including Whitney Houston, Santana and Destiny's Child. Most importantly Jean has a strong interest in his high-profile charity shows for a variety of causes.
This unique artist has taken the world by storm and is now returning to City Winery on Friday, February 24 at 9 p.m. for the Discovery of Wyclef Jean: An Acoustic Intimate Evening/Up Close & Personal.
The event is brought to you by City Winery, All Handz on Deck and Sak Pase Music Group. One of the most prolific producers in the Haitian music industry, John “Papa Jube” will be hosting the event.
