Private Rat Island (Rattle Island in the 1600s); The View from City Island

I wrote an article here about a private island in New York Harbor, real estate that was for sale at auction, Rat Island,  and  to described the history of the island, illustrated its name and explained why the island’s historic name, Rattle Island, should be restored.  Rat Island was sold to a longtime resident of City Island, a New Yorker whose window has a view of the island, and who visited the mound of real estate north of the East River in Long Island Sound to relax, sightsee, and picnic on the river.

That owner, Alex Schibli, saw my description of the island’s history, and is now petitioning to have the island renamed, Rattle Island, as it was named in the 1600s in Dutch Colonial New York.  If you would like to support this unique private island owner’s petition, please send me a note and I will forward it to him.  He is contacting New York’s authorities about renaming the island, Rattle Island.
