When you hear the word “diner” it is hard not to picture the stereotypical 50's atmosphere where servers dressed in poodle skirts and rode around on roller-skates, serving burgers and fries as the jukebox played the latest Elvis Presley song.

This is quite the ideal picture and while today's diners still offer up burgers and fries, the chances of your meal arriving on skates, is slim to none. While the nostalgia of what a diner was is gone, Amelia's is still offering traditional American food to their customers.

According to Webster's Dictionary, a diner is “a restaurant in the shape of a railroad car,” deriving from the word “dining car.” The first diner can be traced back to 1858 when Walter Scott started selling sandwiches and coffee from a basket to late-night workers and the patrons of men's club room. The idea soon took off in 1872 and expanded into selling food from a horse-drawn covered express wagon. Without even realizing it, Scott inspired what would soon be America's most recognized icons.

With the inspiration of this successful business, other individuals started to form their own companies and manufacture lunch wagons for sale, allowing customers to actually stand inside. Over time these wagons started going through several advances such as etched glass windows, painted murals, electricity, bathrooms and tables to accommodate large orders of food.

While the look of a diner is what customers tend to remember about them, it is the food that makes them an original American trend. Early diner food was based around the use of a grill, with emphasis on easy-to-make breakfast foods. Most diners tend to serve these items all day long, including the classic burgers, fries and club sandwiches.

Amelia's is keeping strong to the diner traditions by offering their customer a wide selection eggs and omelets, breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, and dessert, as well as salads, lunch sandwiches and the all-American beef burgers. Along with the classics, the diner offers new choices in pasta dishes, Italian parmigiana, seafood platters and other hot entrees.

Take a trip back in time to what American dining used to be, with the always popular Amelia's. You can also visit their online site for daily specials and information about delivery.
