It seems like everyone these days is carrying around a yoga or pilates mat, and it's no wonder. New York City is teeming with some fantastic yoga and pilates studios. Whether you're a hardcore yogi that wants to sweat it out, or a beginner simply looking for a gentle stretch and to relax, we've got the perfect spot for you. Below, we've listed our favorite yoga and pilates studios in SoHo and TriBeCa. Say ommmmm!
Yogaworks: For yoga, any way you want it
We love that Yogaworks offers an array of yoga classes that you can tailor to your specific needs – including Ashtanga and Vinyassa Flow for flexibility and strength, Gentle Yoga to relax and revive, and Yogaworks Slim to tone and trim.
Bikram Yoga: For hot, sweaty yoga
You’ll think it’s raining on the inside when you see water dripping off the windows. The studio is heated to a blazing 105 degrees, and the humidity to 40 percent so you lose at least a pound of water weight by just turning up to class (not for the beginners, we'd suggest)! Bikram is a series of 26 beginning, classical Hatha yoga postures.
Do Yoga and Pilates: For pay as you go Yoga
This TriBeCa studio offers a pay-what-you-wish policy ($12 is suggested) or a $99 a month unlimited classes membership. We like the eco-friendly vibe, with recycled wood and bamboo floors, and free UV-filtered water station.
Alycea Ungaro’s Real Pilates: For carving a solid core
Celebs swear by Real Pilates to transform bodies fast. Ungaro describes it as resistance training – pure and simple. Real Pilates has been open for 15 years and boasts all the pilates equipment you need beyond a mat on a bare floor, including the Wunda Chair, the Guillotine and the spine corrector. Classes avaialable at all levels.
Kula Yoga Project: For deep, challenging yoga and awesome retreats
Fans swear by Kula Yoga, a Vinyassa style yoga that challenges, with sun salutations, back bending and inversions and standing and seated postures. Kula offers retreats in Costa Rica, for yoga and surfing fans, and also in Miami.
