Event Details: Fri Jan 20, 2012 - 5:00pm at The Metropolitan Museum of Art ( 1000 5th Avenue )

In celebration of the opening of the New American Wing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Asphalt Orchestra will be performing in the Charles Engelhard Court.

The Asphalt Orchestra is a new street band that brings ambitious processional music to the mobile masses. Their performance will be choreographed by Mark Dechiazza and Susan Marshall, and will feature music by Frank Zappa, Stew and Heidi Rodewald, and more.

The Asphalt Orchestra will also perform a world-premiere arrangement of hymns from the shape note singing tradition, inspired by field recordings of this distinctly American music from the 1940s–60s. Shape note singing developed as a instructional tool in late eighteenth-century New England and was later practiced primarily in Southern churches.

The event is free with Museum admission and takes place on Friday, January 20, from 4:00–5:00 p.m.
