The MTA is considering altering its nocturnal construction schedule in the midst of constantly complaining residents in the area, DNAinfo reports. Apartment residents around East 72nd Street have repeatedly voiced their frustrations surrounding the loud drilling that takes place after 10 p.m and can last as late as 4 a.m.
Engineers for the MTA are planning visits to residents to hear and feel what the effects are of the late night construction work.
Other resident complaints include a negative impact on local businesses, damage to sidewalks creating walking hazards and breathing difficulties from dust and debris (affectionately known as Second Avenue Cough).
Kevin Ortiz, spokesman for the MTA told DNAinfo, “The MTA is still working on addressing the ongoing noise issues. Engineers offered to visit a sample of apartments to assess the noise in order to evaluate the residents' experience with respect to a potential mitigation”
The MTA is hesitant to stop the late night drilling, stating that it needs to drill at night in order to prepare for dynamiting the following day. Crews state that with a smaller window to drill, delays on the project will be inevitable.
A petition entitled “Stop Late Night Drilling” has been in circulation, and residents as well as some elected officials have showed support.
