Radio Station Silenced When Marshals Lower The Boom!
Radio Station Silenced When Marshals Lower The Boom! - Upper East Side - Local News - NYC

The economy claimed another victim recently, briefly silencing The Centanni Broadcasting Network. The problem occurred when Giovanna's Restaurant, the Upper East Side location from where the two year old internet radio station had been broadcasting was closed without warning by the state marshal for nonpayment of taxes. In June 2010 Centanni began transmitting from Giovanna's every Monday through Wednesday evening when a cost cutting measure led them to abandon their Park Avenue studio in favor great pizza, a good wine selection and a live audience. While initially done to trim the budget, the move quickly grew in popularity as the menu and ambiance added a unique aspect to the station's16 shows as well as an economic boost to the struggling Upper East Side eatery. Sadly, it wasn't enough. Recently the state marshal seized Giovanna's with some of the station's equipment still locked inside.

With the owner of the restaurant unreachable, Centanni and its founders, long time broadcasters John Anello and Mark Shoemaker, were left in search of headphones, microphones and a new home. Fortunately for Centanni, it didn’t take long. After a week of repeats the station was back in business. Now housed at Chez Jacqueline, a French Bistro on MacDougal Street in the West Village, they continued to fill cyberspace with both music and interviews. The topic of each show varies widely from wellness and the paranormal to top names in popular music and film. Past shows have featured an eclectic group of guests ranging from rock stars and sword swallowers to opera singers and local politicians, not to mention my interview with Nearsay honcho Trevor Sumner and staffers Morgan Brady, Max Vishnev, Sarah Shaker & Christine Tsang.

Catch my show Monday's from 8-9pm, or check out the full schedule of programming offered by the station that can be heard worldwide each Monday through Wednesday evening. You can also find all my previous shows in my archives.

Well Tommy, you know I think dearly of you but the truth is we did thank Divino. We thanked him every time and in many ways. That is the shock of it all. You know this team, we came in loyally, brought in slews of costumers, dined and wined there (never free) and tolerated quite a few inconveniences which I will not list here. However, we were stunned at the lack of response and his disappearance, so we couldn't thank him anyway because he went "PUFF" and left. So with that said, I as an intuitive hope he and his family are okay and safe. Centanni survived and is good we to see we are all connected.
Yes, Tom, we all miss both Devino and Giovanna's and enjoyed our time there. Also, I both appreciate his hospitality and feel bad about how things worked out for him as is reflected in my article: "the move quickly grew in popularity as the menu and ambiance added a unique aspect to the station's 16 shows as well as an economic boost to the struggling Upper East Side eatery. Sadly, it wasn't enough." Two small businesses helped each other, that's the American way! Unfortunately, times are tough, he didn't pay his taxes, and they shut him down. We wish him well. However, as you know, money is tight for the station also and it's worth pointing out that while we were given no notice I'm sure he was and a word to the wise would have enabled us to get our equipment out of there. Or he at least could have returned a phone call. You remember our equipment, don't you Tom?
This story makes me sad, I do not hear anyone from the Centanni family thanking Divino, Jean and Giovanna for letting us into their home. Week in, week out, giving us space in their beautiful restaurant with delicious food and high level of hospitality. The story here is how a struggling business offered their help to a new radio network despite the difficulty a reckless banking community created for all small businesses. The story is about Divino, Jean And Giuovanna not a one week loss for radio contact. I miss Giovanna's. And if Divino opens another place, support him, because he supported us. Life's short, true friends are precious. Divino was Centanni's friend.
Wow, I didn't know that. Glad to see Centanni Broadcasting is back up and running. Bonne chance in Chez Jacqueline. Looking forward to checking it out soon.
