The New York Historical Society is currently giving a rare look into the genesis of the American urban landscape in its exhibition entitled Urban Views: American Cities 1717 - 1986.
The exhibition features rare views and displays of the rapidly growing cities in early America. Throughout the centuries, cartography and art have constantly engaged in displaying and capturing the grandiose ever-changing dynamic of the cityscape. This overall concept of accurately displaying early cityscapes features rare works from the eighteenth century transitioning into the present.
The exhibition includes maps, prints and photographs, such as John Bornet’s “The City of New York from Union Hill” and Claude Samton’s “Photomontage of Canal Street”
Urban Views: American Cities 1717-1986 can be seen at the New York Historical Society until June 17, 2012.
