Turmoil and indecision have surrounded Tavern on the Green since it’s closing in 2009. The new renovation project has been dramatically reduced, with a $10 million plan to reduce the Central Park restaurant to a size more reminiscent of its 19th century origins. The grand Crystal Room with its steel frame skeleton is now gone, but new design plans give the Tavern a modern glass enclosure.
The renderings featured in Curbed appears to accommodate year round seating within the Park. The Landmarks Preservation Commission generally approves of the building, but remains weary of the overly modern addition. The Commission stated that the “greenhouse like” addition clashes with the original architecture and stands in stark contrast with the park itself.
