Police and Health Department officials removed six illegal food carts off the street of Washington Heights earlier this month, DNAinfo reports. The operation was just the latest in a series of crackdowns against area vendors.
The NYPD swept Broadway between West 155th and 168th streets, taking away six carts. The carts sold assorted foods, including Mexican tamales and Dominican pastelitos.
The sting was part of a year-long operation conducted in part with the Department of Health.
The street vendors in Washington Heights are the equivalent of the issues downtown residents are facing with food trucks and elected officials want to find a balance between encouraging entrepreneurship and maintaining the public health.
