Locals were devastated when Angelina Fiordellisi, the artistic director at the historic Cherry Lane Theatre announced they would be closing their doors back in December. After receiving hundreds of phone calls and letters from neighbors and contributing artists, Fiordellisi announced on Aug. 25 that she would be keeping the location open, Playbill reports.
The decision was made after the theater cut through the $250,000 deficit by reducing expenses and cutting back the staff, as well as a revised budget plan. Fiordellisi is expecting the deficit to paid off by January 2012.
Along with the announcement, Cherry Lane is presenting some new shows to potentially bring in revenue. On September 11 at 2 p.m. they will be showing Hair, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, depicting the effects of the attacks on the world and the playwright's own family.
