NYU came out with a report saying it's great for the neighborhood. Big surprise, right? Along with The New School, the report says NYU employs 10,350 people and generates an annual payroll of $611 million, according to Crain's. The report also argues that the schools are the leading sources of private investment in the neighborhood, while drawing visitors during commencement and student move-in.

But some aren't impressed, like Andrew Berman, executive director of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation and NearSay contributor.

“Of course NYU contributes to the economy of the Village and New York City,” Berman told Crain's. “But the real question now is should NYU's massive proposed expansion be focused on a neighborhood like the Village, which would be overwhelmed and fundamentally changed by it.”
