In general, many New York art exhibits do not directly venerate the artist responsible for the works. Often times, the exhibits are depictions of an artist’s vision, which, in turn, indirectly addresses the artist and his or her concerns. But rarely do they focus distinctly and visually on the artist at hand.
In an interesting turn that is almost veering on the side of narcissism, WNYC's "Gallerina" blog revealed Bushwick's Famous Accountants art gallery's most recent exhibit, Per-son-age.
Not only do the videos featured in this exhibit contain images of their respective artists, but the works are also meant to imply a certain disconnect between the audience and the work if it were not for the presence of the artist.
Whereas many artists portray their intended message and from there allow the rest of their works’ interpretation up to the audience, Per-son-age essentially tells the audience what it is they are supposed to see and understand through the featured videos. The artist is still in full control of his or her work, and they have complete power over whether their audience will be left wholly mystified or in the know. Hence the exhibit’s title – Per-son-age – which elevates a person to a higher level of importance, as representing something larger and more persuasive than just a single individual.
