A close friend of celebrities, politicians and developmentally disabled children, Elizabeth, the Brooklyn Children’s Museum’s Iguana of 19 years was pronounced dead on November 14. Elizabeth was a close friend and confidant of Mayor Michael Bloomberg who offered a personal letter after her death stating, “clearly Elizabeth was a very special Iguana,” The New York Times.

Elizabeth’s death comes during a traumatic time for the Brooklyn Children’s museum, after the passing of Sunkist, an 8-year old corn snake just last week. Elizabeth reveled in the glamor of the bright lights of New York City, sharing the stage at the Apollo with Matthew Broderick, Vanessa Williams and “senior” Muppets Statler and Waldorf.

The Museum’s live animal programmer Jared Astin expressed grief to The New York Times where he mentioned he was planning a memorial service for Elizabeth in her old sanctuary, the museums greenhouse. Stay tuned for updates.
