Hurricane Irene has precipitated (pun intended) a declaration of a state of emergency in New York. If you are on the water's edge in Brooklyn, you may want to check out the attached link of potential evacuation zones.
Zone A carries the highest risk of flooding from a potential storm surge and Zone B may experience storm surge from a moderate hurricane. There are multiple blocks in the Williamsburg and Greenpoint area that could be affected.
Mayor Bloomberg has already urged Zone A inhabitants throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn to evacuate by Friday to mitigate against traffic jams and the shutdown of the public transport system on Saturday. Depending on the severity of the situation, he may issue a mandatory evacuation order for Zone A areas by 8 am on Saturday.
In the meantime, if you don't intend to leave your home for higher or safer ground, make sure you have adequate supplies of food, water and other essentials.
Stay safe!
